Science in Action - Exploring Magnets, Binary Code and Barcodes

Science is not just about memorising facts, it is about trying to understand the world around us.

At Haverstock school in the science lessons we learn the basic rules of the scientific method, about critical thinking and how to work together.

Students later take this knowledge and skills outside the classroom, where science gets real.

One of the main topics in science is magnetism and the properties of magnets.

During the celebration of the science week students in year 8 had the opportunity to apply this knowledge to investigate how machines write and read bar codes.

Student Torry  Cole   says “I  love my science lessons because I learn many interesting things. Today I really enjoyed how to write messages using binary code, which is made of 0 and 1 only and how to read the messages using a magnet. Now I know how the bar codes in the products that we buy are written and how they can be read. It is all very exciting”
