Year 11 Art and Design - Inspiring Visits to October Gallery and Frieze Sculpture

Thursday 8 October

Year 11 GCSE Art and Design students launched their final coursework unit, Structure, with a visit to the world-renowned October Gallery to explore Beninese artist Romuald Hazoumè’s new exhibition, My Blue Period, followed by a visit to Frieze Sculpture Exhibition in Regent’s Park.

Students were privileged to be the first to experience Hazoumè’s exhibition which includes masks made out of recycled materials, exploring the illegal petrol trade between Nigeria and Benin. The gallery’s education team led a workshop connecting the artist’s work to their coursework brief, encouraging students to consider its political and social contexts before creating their own responses using recycled materials.

The group then headed to Regent’s Park to explore the annual Frieze Sculpture exhibition. From futuristic outer-space scenes to striking 3D-printed columns, the sculptures inspired curiosity and creativity, all enjoyed against the backdrop of a beautiful autumnal walk.
