Year 7 Meet Author Piu DasGupta

Our new Year 7 students have had an exciting start to their reading journey at Haverstock, meeting author Piu DasGupta during a special virtual author visit on today.

The visit was part of our Year 7 Transition Summer Book Club, now in its sixth year at Haverstock. Before joining us in September, every new Year 7 student received their own free copy of Piu’s novel, Secrets of the Snakestone, to read over the summer, along with a Question and Activities booklet to help them explore the story.

Giving every student a book of their own to keep is an important part of our commitment to reading for pleasure. National Literacy Trust research shows that children and young people who own their own books are nearly four times as likely to say they enjoy reading and nearly four times as likely to read daily.

Since starting at Haverstock, students have continued exploring Secrets of the Snakestone through tutor-time sessions, with each tutor group submitting three questions for Piu about her writing, inspirations and the novel.

During the virtual visit, students heard directly from Piu about her journey as an author and the ideas behind Secrets of the Snakestone, as well as having their questions answered. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring the book to life and connect our students with the person behind the story.

And this is just the beginning of their library journey. Very soon, our Year 7 students will take part in their Library Induction, where they will discover our collection, learn how to borrow books and find out more about the many opportunities available in the library.

We hope the Transition Summer Book Club has inspired our new Year 7 students to keep reading, discover new authors and enjoy everything the Haverstock Library has to offer.
